Introducing a New Open Access Multidisciplinary Sport Medicine Video Resource

By Dr. Stephen F. Brockmeier

Video Journal of Sports Medicine (VJSM) is a new open access video journal focusing on video-based teaching and learning and aims to provide useful surgical, rehabilitation, and physical examination techniques as well as other demonstrations for providers across orthopaedic sports medicine disciplines in an effort to support the health of all athletes.

Digital media has transformed the educational space and expanded how we all learn new techniques, evolve our clinical care, and deliver best practices across sports medicine in the management of athletes and active people. With this in mind, we have developed the Video Journal of Sports Medicine. The journal recently launched its inaugural issue and new open access content is published on a rolling basis. Visit the site here: https://journals.sagepub.com/home/vjs.

VJSM brings the power of peer review to medical video. Readers will be reassured to know that every video article in VJSM has gone through a rigorous peer review process and authors will be delighted that their efforts will result in a citable and searchable journal publication” states Bruce Reider, MD, AOSSM Executive Editor and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Emeritus, University of Chicago. Likewise, authors are assured that each video article has its own DOI and provides them with peer-reviewed publication credit for their work.

Unique in the current orthopaedic journal landscape, VJSM articles emphasize video presentation of knowledge, with written materials serving to complement the video. Each article consists of an 8- to 10-minute video. Written elements include a short, structured abstract, a transcript of the narration of the video, the author conflict of interest declaration, and a reference list. The content includes both established and original surgical techniques, as well as patient evaluation, rehabilitation, and other nonsurgical treatment methods.

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is the premier global, sports medicine organization representing the interests of orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals who provide comprehensive health services for the care of athletes and active people of all ages and levels. They cultivate evidence-based knowledge, provide extensive educational programming, and promote emerging research that advances the science and practice of sports medicine. www.sportsmed.org
