Eighth Annual Peer Review Week – Closing post
As the eighth annual Peer Review Week comes to a close it feels appropriate to reflect back on this year’s theme, ‘Research Integrity: Creating and supporting trust in research.’ In support of this theme we shared a series of posts throughout the week, including: views from SAGE’s Research Integrity and Inclusion Manager, information on the role of researchers and authors in promoting research integrity, insight into the role and remit of our Research Integrity Group, a view into SAGE’s involvement with COPE, and tips on how to be an ethical and constructive reviewer.
In my role as Director of SAGE’s Global Peer Review Team I see firsthand the effort that goes in to working towards upholding the standards of publication ethics and research integrity, as well as the determination from individuals across our organization to continuously improve on that standard. While peer review plays an important role in verifying and validating the research that we publish, it undeniably has its faults. This was a theme that surfaced multiple times by many scholars across multiple disciplines at the Nineth International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication, an organization whose ‘aim is to encourage research into the quality and credibility of peer review and scientific publication, to establish the evidence base on which scientists can improve the conduct, reporting, and dissemination of scientific research.’[1]
In our role as publishers, we aim to work with other actors in the broader publishing ecosystem – which includes authors, reviewers, journal editorial office staff, societies, institutions and universities, organizations and initiatives, just to name a few – to collaboratively foster and maintain trust in the integrity of the scholarly research, which is vetted via peer review and ultimately added to the body of scholarly research. The posts from throughout the week serve to highlight a select few ways in which SAGE engages with the academic publishing community to work together and advocate for improvement in peer review and research integrity.
SAGE is a proud supporter of Peer Review Week, an initiative which we have been involved with since it first launched in 2016. Although this Peer Review Week comes to a close, it’s not too late to join in the conversation on social media using the hashtags #PeerReviewWeek22 and #ResearchIntegrity .
