Researchers from AO Spine and Praxis Spinal Cord Institute in Vancouver, Canada, have published a new set of clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of acute spinal cord injury (SCI). These guidelines play a major role in making treatment decisions for example in the timing of surgical decompression and the hemodynamic management in cases of acute SCI. Despite the mounting evidence, implementing guidelines into daily clinical practice is challenging—given biases towards clinicians’ hardened routines or material deficiencies in different global health contexts.
Read MoreIn patriarchal societies where men have more power, women often face unfair treatment both at home and outside. Read MoreThe COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have shed light on Europe’s dependencies in critical sectors such as healthcare and energy. While Europe has been successful in reducing its energy dependency towards Russia, dependencies towards China remain considerable. De-risking from China will be challenging amidst a digital and green transition which will require raw materials and cleaner energy. Yet de-risking will be crucial for the EU to avoid repeating mistakes from the past and to increase Europe’s resilience against foreign interference. In this context, it is vital to examine how the EU should de-risk from China, how it should counter Chinese influence in third countries and in Europe, and how it should increase its own engagement in countries that are central for the twin transition. On the basis of an analysis, following recommendations can be made.

Read MoreAround the world, public transportation (PT) services are the most common and longest-established type of “shared mobility”. When we now think about rural areas, this concept of PT is at odds with rural mobility patterns, where population density is lower and population is usually scattered in numerous small settlements, from individual farm sites to country towns. This translates into a low density of demand. One way to combat this is by giving more space to locally planned and operated services and to develop better-tailored solutions and more cost-efficient ways of service provision.
Read MoreContemporary terrorism trends have reached new levels of unpredictability, making terrorism and radicalisation harder to address. This is due to two main factors that have emerged only recently. The first is the bipolarity of the terrorist threat, where, on the one hand, major international crises like the war in Ukraine are amplifying the magnitude and importance of radical groups; And on the other hand, European countries are witnessing a rise of lone-actor attacks on their territory. The second factor is the ideological fluidity that has pervaded radicalisation trends. Individuals seize ideological narratives and communication strategies from several ideologies. This increases the resonance of the threat while making it more difficult to identify. We must better understand these two dynamics to offer concrete solutions to contemporary terrorism.

Of note, the term First Nations people in Canada refers to Indigenous peoples who are registered members of a band. Given this gap in knowledge, First Nations people and their allies from the University of Manitoba created a research team to examine the mental health of both First Nations children and other children living in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
